High-risk jobs like police work lend themselves to a culture of ongoing training and leadership development because the teachers are part of the team; their success and safety are directly affected by how well they continue to train new officers once they’ve left the classroom. How do we as talent development professionals mimic this dynamic when we are often not “part of the team” we’re tasked with training?
Training for high-stakes roles like that of a police officer involves formal training, but an individual's success depends more on their on-the-job training and supervisor investment. Peers and supervisors are invested in staff success because those are the people who have their back; they rely on them to catch their mistakes, look out for their safety, render them aid, and communicate seamlessly with them. How do we mimic that level of investment and harness the future-proofing power of “everboarding” in the corporate learning space where we as trainers have never done the role, aren’t part of that employee’s team, and may have the perspective of “the ideal” but not always “the realistic”? How can we empower the boots-on-the-ground trainers (peers, managers, supervisors) to be invested in their coworkers’ success?
