What do you do when your data says that you are doing it all wrong?

Maine high school students are nearly last in the nation in average SATs while Maine is routinely in the top 10 in per student spending. Something is deeply wrong and policy makers need to make decision on how to react to this data. In 2020, Medicare Part D made it's highest drug spend in each of the 50 states on a single medicine and it had nothing to do with Covid-19. A local company recognized that inventory forecasts were incorrect as customers would often buy a substitute item when their desired product was out of stock. All of these issues require careful understanding of data, an ability to communicate that data, and the confidence in the decision making that follows. We tend to be bad at this Let's see if in the brief time we have, whether we can understand the problems and begin working towards better solutions.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Andrew Kinley is an assistant teaching professor in the Analytics program located at the Roux Institute in Portland, Maine. Andrew focuses his teaching on developing the skills and knowledge to communicate accurately the value of data models with disparate groups both within a specific industry and across multiple industries and domains. He empowers students to leverage the strengths and benefits of utilizing data driven models while highlighting the ethics of its use and the potential to misuse and mislead others in its application. Andrew has a Ph.D in Computer Science from Indiana University where his research looked at capturing descriptions of procedural solutions to problems and automating the adaptation of these procedures to analogous problems. He has previously held faculty positions at Fordham University, and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He currently lives in the greater Portland, Maine area and teaches at the Roux Institute Campus and online.
