Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – Strategies that Work

Our program, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – Strategies that Work, scheduled for April 19th from 8-9.30 is sure to be an interesting and dynamic discussion. Our panelists will share their successes, lessons learned along the way, and leave us with valuable insights for doing this work within our own organizations. Our panelists bring a depth and breadth of expertise in this topic representing Maine from health care, higher education, state government, and the business sector. This trending topic is here to stay because they are committed to Maine and believe that communities invested in the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion reap the rewards of diverse cultural perspectives that inspire creativity and drive innovation, all of which contribute to making Maine a great place to live and work. Thank you for joining us as we listen to their journey in this complex and courageous work.

    Our Panel

    Dr. Idella Glenn – USM

    Idella Goodson Glenn, Ph.D. serves as Vice President for Equity, Inclusion and Community Impact at the University of Southern Maine (USM). Her responsibilities include promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and guiding USM in building a sustainable environment that is inclusive for all faculty, staff and students.

    Dr. Glenn has 30 years of experience working in higher education and 25 years of experience in the DEI field. Previously, she has worked as Special Advisor on Inclusivity and Diversity at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA and also served as the Director for Diversity Education and Retention Initiatives at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. In addition, she served in various DEI capacities culminating as Asst. VP for Student Development and Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion and at Furman University in Greenville, SC.

    Dr. Glenn received her B.S. in computer science and mathematics from Furman University. She completed her Master’s in Higher Educational Administration at University of South Carolina and her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Clemson University. She is a member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.

    Dr. Ryan Polly – MaineHealth

    Ryan G. Polly, PhD is the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for MaineHealth in Portland, Maine. He is also a Fellow in the ACGME Equity Matters DEI Leadership program. Ryan is a recognized thought leader, educator and author with over 20 years professional experience in organizational and leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and college-level teaching.

    Ryan’s personal triumphs in the face of adversity, as both a transgender man and a first generation college student coming from poverty, have provided him with unique insights into the complexity of the human experience. It is these experiences that Ryan draws upon to inspire people to move through challenges and achieve genuine transformation. Modeling vulnerability and perpetual growth, Ryan makes genuine connections with people, sharing stories of failure, resilience, and victory. His contagious passion for positive transformation leaves people feeling empowered to employ tools and techniques in their personal and professional lives for lasting impact.

    Ryan holds a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies, and a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and he is an ordained Interfaith/Interspiritual Minister (One Spirit Interfaith NYC). Ryan has been recognized for his leadership contributions with a “Rising Star” award (2018 Vermont Business Magazine), and a Champion in Workplace Learning & Organizational Development award (Vermont Association for Talent Development, 2015). In addition, he developed a globally recognized leadership development program, “Compass,” (2017, HR.Com) and a spiritual informed leadership development program “Emergence” (One Spirit, NYC). Both programs leverage innovative experiential design to graduate leaders who are capable of leading social transformation in their organizations and their communities.

    Mr. David Pease – Bangor Savings Bank

    David Pease is Senior Vice President - Director of Talent, Diversity & Inclusion at Bangor Savings Bank. His HR career spans 35 years in business, nonprofit, healthcare, academia and corporate America. He has a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Lesley University and a BS in Political Science and Communication from the University of Southern Maine. David has earned the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and the Senior Certified Professional (SCP-SHRM) national designations. He been on the faculty of the Maine HR Convention and served as an adjunct faculty member in Thomas College’s graduate school. David is the former State Director of Maine SHRM and received the distinguished Maine HR Leader of the Year award. Recently he was selected the Unsung Hero of the Year by PROPEL for creating a safe and inclusive work culture for people. He is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences. David serves as mentor and coach to numerous professionals in all stages of their career.

    Editor of the quarterly DEI Newsletter to staff. Train both residents and staff on various forms of Bias. My goals are to create a work place within the DOC where each person feels heard, Understood and accepted.
