Introduction to Adult Learner-Centered Training (for Teacher-Centered Trainers)
Is your training style learner- and adult-centered enough to teach even the most challenging of topics?
PROGRAM
This presentation will guide participants through the stages of the Adult Learning Cycle to demonstrate the principles of adult learning. This approach has been used with medical trainers from developing countries to prepare them to teach sexual and reproductive health (SRH) counseling.
SRH counseling requires providers to overcome religious and cultural biases. It requires communication skills that are rarely taught in medical training and knowledge that is often not included in standard “gynecological” training.
Training for SRH counseling therefore has to be a combination of knowledge, attitudes, and skills. This requires a strong foundation in adult learner-centered training, which is rare for medical trainers anywhere in the world. My orientation draws on the writings of Malcolm Knowles and the work of Jane Vella (Global Learning Partners), and it has been a reliable tool in my "training the trainers" experience.
Learning Goals:
- Describe how to orient and motivate "teacher-centered" trainers to the adult learner-centered teaching (ALCT) approach by modeling the adult learning cycle
- Teach the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed for effective ALCT
- Orient trainers away from the "teacher-centered" tradition and toward the importance and skills of the adult learner-centered approach
OUR PRESENTER
Jill Tabbutt-Henry
Ms. Tabbutt-Henry has over 35 years of experience in curriculum development, training of trainers, and public health education and counseling. Twenty of those years have been focused on international sexual and reproductive health. From 2004 to 2016, Jill developed curricula for training direct-care workers in long-term care and training of trainers. Since 2016, she has been working on curricula for family planning counseling in developing countries, including field-testing and conducting training of trainers.
Jill is recognized for her expertise in creating adult learner-centered training materials for health professionals and paraprofessionals; in developing communication skills between workers and clients/patients/residents; in developing counseling skills for sexual and reproductive health services in a wide range of cultural and geographic settings; and for coordinating multi-team staff development and training efforts.
